The History of the Wich
…we’ve been here for a while

The Building

Our building was built in 1920. It was originally a Tailor shop in the main bar area. The tailor lived behind the shop, the poolroom was the bedroom and the game room was the kitchen. Our Ladies Room is the original bathroom, just a toilet and sink, no tub! Eventually it became a Butlers Grocery store, then the Hamilton Grill in 1934.

In 1971 it becomes Angie’s Sports Bar. Angie’s was a shot and a beer kind of place, a typical local neighborhood watering hole. Most of the customers were hunters and fishermen, which led to a Hunting and Fishing Club using the bar for its regular meetings and social gatherings. Although it was only a few blocks from College Ave, students were discouraged from patronizing the bar by the owner and the regulars.

Opening

This all changed on August 5, 1974, when Angie’s was reopened as The Ale ‘N ‘Wich Pub. The game room was originally a kitchen, that’s where the ‘Wich part comes from, it was converted in 1980. You can still see the white tiles on the wall, where the grill used to be. The outdoor Patio was fenced in around 1991. Many famous people have crossed our threshold during the past 32 years. Jim Bajak, lead guitarist for The Smithereens, who used to live right across the street, and hung out in the bar on a regular basis with the rest of the band before and during their rise to fame. There is the New Brunswick legend that Jerry Garcia stopped in one night and sat at one of our old tables. That table is still on the premises, in a safe and secure location. Various members of the band Phish and their Phish groupies used to come by when they played locally back in the 90’s. James Gandolfini, from the Sopranos and his college buddy Mario Batali, the chef from The Food Network, have stopped in a couple of times during the past few years. Gandolfini lived in the Brookside apartments during college, so he was probably a regular back then as well.

Various members of the infamous New Brunswick all-star band The Slaves Of New Brunswick stop in now and then to soak up the vibe they are; Jig’s from Jigs and The Pigs, Tony Shanahan the bass player in The Patti Smith Band, and local rock legend singer, song writer, solo artist and former member of Styx Glen Burtnik.

Updates

If you haven’t been to the Wich in a while, you should stop by to see all the great changes. We took down the nasty drop ceiling and restored the original tin ceiling. New fans, new low-level lighting fixtures over the tables, and new lighting over the foosball table. Out back, well you have to see it to believe it. Where else is there a Pub in New Brunswick, that doesn’t serve food, but lets you bring in your own. We have a covered outdoor smoking patio, where you can drink and smoke at the same time?

Handicap Accessibility

The Ale ‘N ‘Wich is handicap accessible via the side gate on Louis St. Just call 732-745-9496 for assistance. Be aware that we are in a residential neighborhood, we do not have a parking lot and all parking is resident permit required from Monday 12:01am-Saturday 12:01am.

Need to rent the bar for a special event?

Renting the Bar

The ‘Wich is always available to rent for private parties. You can decorate it and bring in your own food, music, entertainment; you just have to take it all down, and out when you are done. The outdoor Patio is perfect for your private BBQ, spring, summer or fall. Maybe you don’t have enough people to rent the entire bar for yourself; we can accommodate smaller groups, while the bar is open to the public, as well.

Rules…
…and ways to get kicked out

Rules
  1. You must be 21 years old
  2. No matter if you are bald, grey and wrinkled, you must prove to us that you are 21
  3. Just because your friend says so, doesn’t cut it
  4. Just because you’re ugly won’t help you either
  5. We accept valid/legit drivers licenses, NJ state issued ID cards, and passports from any country
  6. We do not accept expired driver licenses, duplicate drivers licenses, expired passports with your baby picture on it, county ID cards, any ID cards issued at your local flea market or ordered online
  7. If you are so confident that you are 21 but can’t prove it, you are more than welcome to try your luck at any other bar in town
  8. If you are drunk, go home

Finally!!! We sell alcohol; DO NOT bring your own. You may no longer bring any container of any kind (soda, water, juice, coffee) into the bar. We also reserve the right to inspect all backpacks and pocketbooks! Reason for this is, at the end of the night we are finding bottles and cans of beer that we do not sell. SORRY!

Ways to Get Kicked Out
  1. Not 21
  2. No ID
  3. Drunk
  4. Not being able to stand, sit, or keep your head up
  5. Begging for beer, money or cigarettes
  6. Being caught with alcohol we do not sell
  7. Taking money off the bar
  8. Distributing material not pertaining to the Wich
  9. Giving patrons the impression you work here
  10. Defacing the bar
  11. Having to be told a second time to stop doing something
  12. Loud and excessive profanity. Yes, we are a bar, but it’s not 1945 and WWII didn’t just end!

This pertains to regulars as well!
